Introducing Dr Elissa Pally, DC

Hi All,

This weekend we flew to Atlanta to witness a Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Life University conferred upon our niece Elissa.


After the graduation we posed with Elissa and her parents Alan and Barbara in front of the Clock Tower. The hands sculpture was modeled after Life University founder, Dr Sid Williams.

Elissa has worked very hard for almost four years and we could not be more proud.

On a somber note, the base of the Clock Tower is the size of a prison cell and inscribed with the names of the many people imprisoned for practicing Chiropractic prior to its widespread legalization.

Elissa took us on a campus tour that included this beautiful spinal artwork.

We then headed to downtown Atlanta for a celebration dinner at the Sundial restaurant atop the Westin Hotel. Sitting to Elissa's left are her boyfriend Phil, Phil's sister Jackie and his parents Susan and Kieth.

The Sundial restaurant rotates once per hour and after sunset we enjoyed the lights of the city.
A great day full of pride, family and joy.

Beach, Baja and ABBA

Hi All,

We wrapped up our wonderful weekend walking along the oceanfront in Deerfield Beach. The water was a beautiful shade of aqua


but the wind built up a big surf.

After our walk we had lunch at the nearby Baja Cafe with funky decor

and bright painted windows.

Last stop was an ABBA concert performed by the cover group Abracadabra. High energy (for south Florida!) and great fun.
Tomorrow we are back to Barberville.

Green Cay

Hi All,

This morning we went to the other great artificial wetland near Delray Beach. Green Cay is newer with fewer dead trees to serve as nesting sites.


Still, there are lots of smaller birds like this Sora.

Hidden in the trees was this screech owl.

This young cormorant perched on the railing

unaware that he should not let people get too close.

Here a tricolor heron swims out of the shadows.

It is hard not to overexposed a white ibis in the sun.

This green heron waited patiently for a fish.
On the way out we were treated to the sight of a male painted bunting but he was too distant to photograph.

Return to Wakodahatchee

Hi All,

Back to check out the nesting birds an Wakodahatchee with Roberta and Elliot.


This year the nesting birds are dominated by wood storks.

Look closely for the three chicks in this nest.

Here's a little blue heron with a nest hidden away.

Purple gallinule

not to be confused with the purple swamp hens.

This guy kept a close watch on us as we walked by. A face only a mother could love.

A Busy Week

Hi All,

One of the other settlement volunteers made this delicious strawberry shortcake to get us in the mood for the upcoming strawberry festival.


We went for a hike at Princess Place Park and spotted this nine-banded armadillo looking for lunch.

In New Smyrna Beach we found this glass artist with a shop full of marvelous glass sculptures.

Friday we drove to Delray Beach to visit our snowbird friends from Massachusetts. A special surprise was a visit from Carol & Dave Portney, friends we have not seen in about 30 years. They are now living in Southport, NC and we may get to visit them on our way north.

Rainbows & Silly Signs

Hi All,

We had more rain yesterday than we have had since late October. Our reward was this rainbow above the Settlement.


Earlier in the week Sandy was shopping for candles and fancy soap in a shop. To kill time, Carl was reading the silly signs for sale. These are his three favorites.


"After Monday and Tuesday, even the calendar says, WTF !"


"Deal with stress the way dogs do. If you can't eat it or play with it, pee on it and walk away."


"Why does cat fur stick to everything but the cat ?" This is certainly true in our motor home.

Another Wonderful Weekend

Hi All,

We started the weekend helping out at the Settlement yard sale.

In the afternoon, friends Walt and Betty stopped by on their way home to Charlotte, NC. We gave them a tour of the Settlement then had lunch in Deland. It was a great visit but too short.

Sunday we drove to New Smyrna Beach to walk on the beach for a while. Even though it was a warm Sunday afternoon, the beach was pretty deserted.



Almost more birds than people. A large flock of royal terns with laughing gulls mixed in

a small group of red knots

and a Snowy egret !

We must have gotten a little too close.

After a few miles on the beach we drove to the old historic downtown where we discovered an art fair under the spreading live oaks.
The winter is flying by.
