While in Mitchell SD, we visited a prehistoric Native American archaeological site. It has been enclosed and protected in a huge dome structure.

Marvels of Mitchell
Amazingly, they change the murals every year. This year's theme is "The Big Top". Check out these circus themed murals .
There are more great murals inside like Mt Rushmore.
Back in 1969 after the moon landing, the theme was "Space"
The smell of popcorn permeates the building and it was delicious.

We have driven across South Dakota about a dozen times. We have always known about the Corn Palace but never stopped since we thought it was a silly tourist site. It is but we vastly underestimated the incredible murals that can be created with 12 colors of corn!
It really is all corn!

Humor from Hastings
Hi All,
We left Hastings this morning, headed north to Mitchel, SD and Sandy's new drivers license. Our 12 long, often frustrating days did have funny moments though.
Walt & Betty said, "In Casablanca, Rick told Ilsa, We'll always have Paris", you guys, "Will always have Hastings!".
At the Crane Sanctuary we spotted this sign
After they finished fixing the coach, Carl went into the office and told them he had called the fire department " just in case their adding machine caught fire while totaling our bill."

Engine Control Module(ECM)
Hi All,
Our new ECM has been ordered and should arrive Monday. With even a sliver of luck we will be on the move again next Tuesday afternoon.
ETA in Grand Teton is now Sat 5/28.

More Pioneer Village
There was an informative exhibit about the Pony Express but nothing photogenic. This is what put them out of business, the Telegraph Office.
Carl love little tidbits like this.
He likes steam locomotives too.
Looks like any other mid 19th century school house until you realize that the bookcase in back holds all of the original textbooks and all of the student records.
Pioneer families needed to learn new home construction techniques. Few trees, no rocks or clay for bricks. Sod ( the top dirt layer held together by grass roots) was all that was avail.
This building had a bazillion pieces of china and glassware.
And finally some nostalgia , for those "of a certain age", we have the April 1953 TV schedule.
We'll, the shop closed at 5:00 while Carl was typing, with no further progress on the coach. Perhaps tomorrow.

Pioneer Village-Milden, NE
This is a Sears Buggy from their 1909 catalog.
An exact, full scale replica of the Wright Flyer.
An ornate Gypsy Wagon from 1850. One of the original camping vehicles. Few survived since it was tradition to burn the wagon and contents when the owner died!
Antique outboard engines galore.
Not too old but neat, this is an amphibious car. Note the high exhaust pipe and dual propellers.

Still in Hastings. Shop still troubleshooting; new computer being installed as this is being typed.
The Pioneer Village has a huge collection that shows the evolution of American life from homestead days to the 1960's. The main museum building has 350 autos, 20 aircraft and a dizzying array of mechanical stuff.

Hi All,
After visiting family and friends in the St Augustine area and friends in Austin, we were heading north towards South Dakota when we picked up some bad diesel in Nebraska.
Note to self- Don't travel on Friday the 13th.
After what seemed like forever, we got towed to a truck repair place in Hastings, NE. They will look at it Monday morning!
In search of something to do, we found the Stuhr Museum on Grand Island about a half hour north. 100 original buildings from the 18th through early 20th century, many with folks demonstrating historical skills like hat making, tin smithing and cooking.
They also have museum exhibits of "unusual " items.
