Cross Country in 10 Days



Hi All,

If you are driving a car and staying in motels you could cover the 2,400 miles from Grand Teton to Tampa in five days driving eight hours a day at the speed limit (80 mph in WY and NE). No so in a motorhome. We travel 60-65 mph wary of the cross wind's especially on I-80. Plus, with the time spent setting up and then getting ready for travel in the morning, six hours of driving is a full day. We drove three days straight to Omaha then took a day off. We visited the Durham Museum built in the 1931 train station.

The huge waiting room was impressive 

and it included several statues depicting 1940's passengers. When you walked up to the statues they began to talk about their train trip.

Two long driving days brought us to Nashville. We had done the bar hopping music scene a few times and since we have quit drinking we found an alternative, the Tennessee State Museum.

We were blown away with the scope and quality of the exhibits and the wonderful docent that led our one hour tour. Next time you are in Nashville, save your liver and feed your brain!

Three more driving days brought us to our temporary home at the Spanish Main RV Park in Thonatossassa, FL. It is an old park with narrow roads and mostly long term residents in park models but we had little choice since we made the reservation so late. It will do for now. 

Saturday morning as we prepared for our final driving day, Carl decided the anthem for the day would be "One Day More" from Les Mis. We listened as we ate breakfast.

Today we visit Alan & Barbara, Sandy's brother and sister-in-law and begin a serious search for a condo in the area.

Counting our Blessings

Hi All,

Looking back on our bitter-sweet final departure from Gros Ventre Campground in Grand Teton National Park we took some time count our blessings. To think about the places we have visited and volunteered at during our 18 years of retirement. To think of the friendships and extended family we have developed and the many warm Jewish communities that have welcomed us as we passed their way. Our phone contacts include 163 entries for people we have met while travel and volunteering!

For the record, we have driven our motorhomes 232,878 miles (and counting). Visited 46 US states, 9 Canadian Provinces and 8 Mexican states.

We have volunteered at 3 National Parks, 4 National Wildlife Refuges, 2 National Forests and 3 state or local parks or refuges for a total of 24,902 hours.

There are surely more adventures to come though perhaps at a slower pace. We have promised to not become two old farts sitting in a Florida condo waiting for the restaurant early bird specials.

Geek Alert: Falcon 9 Launch



Hi All,

I watched the Space-X launch of 2 Intelsat Communications satellites last night. It was just after sunset at Kennedy Space Center.

This remarkable photo was shot from the drone ship out in the Atlantic where the booster would ultimately land. The rocket climbed high enough to be back in sunlight and the expanding engine plume looked like a squid.

Three minutes later the booster had landed, covered with soot from its 14 flights ( they refurbish but don't wash them.) Some of the exhaust cloud is still visible.

On the Road Again-One More Time





Hi All,

We leave Grand Teton Thursday to head back east. We went on a final walk along Schwabacher's Landing, soaking up the scenery.

We also made one more trip down Moose Wilson Road to say good-bye to the bears(the bear we saw was asleep in a tree).

It was bitter sweet since, as some of you know, we have decided to hang up the keys, sell the motorhome and buy a condo in SW Florida. So, we will not be back this way, at least not for the season.

We have also been agonizing over the hurricane damage on Sanibel. All of our friends there are safe but the damage is incredible, compounded by destruction of the causeway, the only vehicle access to the island.

We will obviously not be volunteering at Ding Darling and we have begun looking for a campground as a base while we are condo shopping.
