Biosphere 2

Hi All,

Today we visited Biosphere 2, a massive artificial environment facility built in the late 80's and now owned and operated by U of Arizona.

The guided tour took us through the rain forest, savannah, mangrove swamp and desert environments as well as the habitat area where eight "biospherians" lived in a closed environment for two years.

This exterior shot shows the huge greenhouse, the habitat area with the tower and the west "lung" (see below for explanation).

The water below is a tropical ocean- 78 degrees with tropical fish.

Here's the mangrove swamp

More of the enclosed environment.

Inside the "south lung". When the biosphere was sealed up, they needed a way to accommodate the thermal expansion of the air inside. Two "lungs" with flexible rubber roofs were built to store the expanded air so they didn't have to vent it outside.

The whole framework and wire structure was fascinating.
We are up in Tucson with Roberta and Elliot for a few days.

Love,
