Three Island Tour

Hi All,

Our ten hour expedition began with a ferry from Oban to the Isle of Mull followed by a bus tour across the island.

We then boarded a small boat to the island of Staffa.

Here our boat approaches the island.
Most of the island is composed of hexagonal basalt columns.

There is a large cave in the face of the basalt called Fingle's Cave.
Our main reason for coming to Staffa was puffins not geology. From up on the cliff tops we saw a few fly out of their burrows but mostly we saw them, about 50 birds, sitting on the water far below.

The boat next took us to the Isle of Iona. This is the seat of Scottish Christianity. In 563 CE St Columba came to Iona from Ireland and introduced the locals to Christianity.

This chapel and the surrounding cemetery are the final resting place for several Scottish kings including MacBeth!

The adjacent nunnery (now a ruin) dates to 1200 and is the oldest in Scotland.
After the ferry ride back to Oban we wandered around the town center and found some ice cream.

Tomorrow we head for Glasgow.

Love,
