Mostar

Hi All,

Today's trip took us into Bosnia-Herzegovina to the town of Mostar. The town is famous for its 16th century Ottoman bridge across the Neretna River. The bridge opened in 1567, was destroyed during the Balkan war in 1993 and was rebuilt in 2004 using some of the stones that had fallen into the river. The east side of the river is a predominantly Muslim community. This photo was taken from behind a mosque.

After yesterday's climb up the bell tower, we declined the opportunity to climb the minarette.

The steep bridge has towers on each side.

Unlike Dubrovnik where virtually all of the war damage had been repaired, many buildings in Mostar show scars from the war.

The war theme continued in the shops where you can choose a pen in 20mm or 7.6mm size.

The east and west approaches to the bridge are lined with shops offering a wide array of items.

This craftsman was hand working a copper piece. A sign in his booth announced this was his last season before he retires. He looks like he earned it!

The banks of the Neretna River were very picturesque.

Love,
