The Journey of “Bear 22097”

Hi All,

In 2017 a young black bear began approaching cars. 

This behavior endangers both people and the bear. Sadly, it is usually the  result of someone feeding the bear from a car.

The young bear was trapped and got Park Service "jewelry", yellow ear tags and a tracking collar. She is now bear# 22097.  She was relocated to a remote section of the park.

As is often the case, she was back in a few weeks. However, the trapping and relocation was successful in that her experience was sufficiently unpleasant that she stayed away from cars and people.

Years passed and 22097 was regularly spotted along the road, entertaining visitors who watched her scarfing down berries.

This spring she came out of hibernation with a cub! Here's the cub climbing a dead tree to get to adjacent berries.

Yesterday we spent three hours with them as they fattened up on berries before crossing the road to drink from a nearby stream and cool off.

This really is the best job in the park!

Dubois Badlands



Hi All,

Northeast of Grand Teton, the small town of Dubois (pop 911) sits in front of rock formations that remind folks of the Badlands of SD.

That was our destination yesterday.

On the way out of town we drove to an overlook to see all of Dubois

Berries and Bears



Hi All,

The Service berries on Moose Wilson Rd are ripe and the bears know it.

Catching Up



Hi All,

We went with Betty & Walt  to view the mountains from Grand Targee ski area. If Grand Teton mountain looks different, this is the view from Idaho.

Not sure what to think about this sign. Guess different consequences motivate different people.

The wall in this photo retains the park supply of road salt/gravel mix behind headquarters . The salt soaks through the wood and the moose come to lick the salt.

All those vertical marks on the wood are "lick marks".

Pronghorn up close look a bit goofy.

The big bull elk is still often along the road.

The berries are beginning to ripen and bear sightings are increasing.

It happens every few years and today, on our 54th, we bought each other the same anniversary card.
