Colter Bay Hike

Hi All,

After a quiet weekend (Thur-Sat), we drove to Colter Bay to hike the figure 8 Lakeshore trail.

Lots of boats in the Colter Bay marina.

It is a beautiful wooded trail

with frequent views to the mountains across the lake.

Near the end of the trail we spotted this white tail deer; wonderful end to delightful hike.
Hard to believe that Monday is September!

Bears & Visitors

Hi All,

Yesterday we saw ten different bears. Even though half of them were 399 and her quadruplets, it was still a remarkable day.

Today was just as busy but with fewer bears. Several things to note in this photo. The man with the straw hat and white beard is Tom Mangelson, world famous nature photographer. Also note that the only person wearing a mask is a young woman who appears to have come out in her underwear.

Another visitor wore this awesome T shirt

One of 399's cubs started across the road then looked back to see where mom was.

Daily new Covid cases are finally falling But look where we have been!

Stay safe & healthy

Smoke & Bears

Hi All,

The smoke from the California fires arrived Wednesday. We are the blue dot in the middle of the smoke map.

By Friday the mountains were almost invisible.

Since long range visibility was impaired we decided we needed a strategy to get closer to the bears.

It worked! Three of 399's four cubs crossed the road right in front of us.

When mom crossed she disappeared quickly into the tall grass.

Birds and Bears

Hi All,

This week was another busy one with lots of bear activity both grizzly and black.

The berries were ripe along Signal Mountain Summit Road. First a small black bear fed along the road causing traffic chaos on the narrow winding road. After a while the bear would wonder out of sight, the traffic would clear and we drove to the top to enjoy the views and cell signal. This raven was right in the parking lot. Sadly it has probably been fed by visitors.

The bird was very mellow and stayed put even after I got out of the car to take this photo.

Here is Bear 399. The brown clump behind her is her quadruplets.
Tuesday, another grizzly bear with two cubs found the berries on the summit road. This is much more dangerous and we exercised our authority to close the road to all traffic. It was reopened this morning when the bears had moved on.

Meanwhile back at Jenny Lake, this black bear was in and out of the visitor area three times yesterday.  We yell and clap to get her moving and by 4:30 she was pooped so stopped to take a nap.
She awoke after about 20 minutes and wandered away. . . at least for now!

When we got back to our car we found a crowd of visitors watching a different black bear sow with one cub-within 50 feet of our car. Soooo, we spent another 45 minutes moving these bears away from the visitor area. Then we went home and made like the bear in the photo above.

Recovering from our First Week

Hi All,

We have Thursday-Saturday off and Thursday is usually devoted to chores & shopping. Friday we relaxed around the coach except when Carl had to climb on to the roof to reattach the cell booster antenna. Nice views of Sandy reading

and our corner of the campground.

As retirees with substantial stock and mutual fund holdings we are relieved that the stock market has rebounded. However, with all of the suffering and unrest across our country, one is forced to conclude that the business and investment communities are just plain tone deaf!

For the past year or so, Carl has been taking lots of vitamin D based on research on quality of life as we age. This graph is a stunner even if the sample size was not great. Food for thought.

Welcome Home Bob & Doug

Hi All,

After two months in orbit on the International Space Station, the crew dragon spacecraft was ready to come home.

Astronauts Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken powered up their Crew Dragon capsule using the huge touch screen displays.
and undocked from the ISS.

On the night side of the earth, their farewell photo of the ISS was infrared.

Next morning they returned to earth, splashing down off Pensacola, away from Hurricane  Isaiah.

The capsule was lifted from the ocean and Doug & Bob exited the dragon and boarded a helicopter to be reunited with their families at NAS Pensacola before flying back to Houston.

Back in Wyoming we have a heat wave with record temperatures yesterday. The bears are keeping cool in the rivers.

We have a new address. If, for any reason, you want to send us "snail mail"

PO Box 393
Moose, WY. 83012

will get to us.

More Space Stuff

Hi All,

As we settled into life in Grand Teton there was lots of space action.

On July 30, NASA launched the Mars 2020 Rover, named Perseverance on a seven month journey to  Mars.

Here is a close-up of the Atlas V at launch. A central core engine and four solid rocket boosters send the rover on its way,

Next February Perseverance will land on Mars and, among other research, collect samples that will be returned to earth on future missions.

Meanwhile, closer to earth, the SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule completed its two month mission to the International Space Station.

Astronauts Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken prepare to undock from the ISS. Three massive touch screens provide all the controls.

They undocked at 7:30 EDT and maneuvered away from the ISS, heading for a splashdown off Pensacola, FL, we'll away from Hurricane Isaiah.

As the ISS grew smaller in view, SpaceX began the final steps in qualifying Crew Dragon for operational NASA missions

Our first Brigade shift is tomorrow.
