Fort Matamzas

Hi All,

Last month we visited Fort Caroline and learned about the Spanish massacre of French soldiers who had attempted to attack St Augustine. Fort Matanzas is the site of that massacre, in Spanish, Matanzas means "slaughter".

The current fort was built 200 years later to protect against attacks by the British colony in Savannah, GA
This small fort had five cannon to protect the southern approaches to St Augustine

The sentry post was well protected

The fort was typically staffed by one officer and six enlisted men. This is the enlisted quarters.

One of the six pound cannon lined up on a passing cabin cruiser
Another fascinating bit of local history and another stamp in our National Park Passport book.

Love,
