Marineland

Hi All,

We had today off so we arranged to meet our friend Evalyn at Marineland just south of St Augustine.

First opened in 1938 as a marine studio for filmmakers to shoot UW scenes (including "Creature from the Black Lagoon"), it evolved to a dolphin show complete with grandstand. It has since evolved again into a marine conservation and education facility. The trainers still teach the 16 dolphins hand signals, though we were told that young dolphins usually mimic the behaviors of the adults.

This is young Coquina who knows when lunch is imminent.

Numerous underwater windows permit great dolphin viewing.

In addition to dolphins, Marineland has several magnificent salt water aquaria. Here's a large clownfish in "his" anemone.

How about this stunning blue surgeonfish.

Not only are the fish stunning, the live corals are breathtaking.

They also rehab cold stunned sea turtles.

The Marineland staff and volunteers were all friendly and informative. They also made a great recommendation for lunch. Here we are at nearby South Beach Grille. View was great, food was better.

How about blackened shrimp, grilled shrimp and fried shrimp. Oh, and asparagus. All excellent.
Another wonderful day with a wonderful friend.

Love,

Sandy & Carl
