iPhone Macro Lens

Hi All,

Many people have asked about the macro lens Carl used for the close up photos.

It's a Moment Lens that snaps into a special phone case

They also sell wide angle and telephoto lenses that also snap into the same case.

Bearly Made It Through the Day

Hi All,

Today we saw five grizzly bears and one black bear. The first three grizzlies were a sow with two cubs 200 yards off the road. Lots of happy visitors but no cell phone photos.

Next we had a young black bear in Jenny Lake Campground. This guy was far too inquisitive, sniffing at bear boxes and tearing at hammocks.
We finally hazed him(her) out of the Campground and safely across the road.

We then joined a jam with two subadult grizzly bears. One of the bears walked on to the road then stopped.

The bear then rolled over for a scratch.
Great fun.

Love,

Last Week

Hi All,

We spent much of the last work week watching these two grizzly cubs recently kicked out by mom.

They are still hanging around the same area.

The last few days have been described as Juneuary. A dusting of snow and below freezing temps.

We got our new Wildlife Brigade Manual last week. Here Sandy is reading it out loud to Ginger like a bedtime story.
Still loving it here.

Back Country Day

Hi All,

As you may remember, every two weeks we have a "Back Country Day" when we hike a park trail, learning more about the park and talking to visitors about bear safely and answering a wide variety of questions. We also keep an ear on the radio for wildlife jams where our help may be needed.

This morning we were fueling our vehicle at Dornan's when dispatch reported people chasing a moose at the nearby Chapel of the Transfiguration. All the brigaders were up north so we went over to check it out.- no moose, no chaser but a jaw dropping Mountain View with a brittle blue sky.

We then drove north to unload some extra traffic cones then off to Colter Bay to hike the Heron Pond/Swan Lake Trail. The beginning of the trail follows the edge of Colter Bay where we watched folks kayaking in the shadow of Mt Moran.

At Swan Lake, the water was so still that it was hard to tell sky from lake.
On the way home we stumbled upon a bear jam with a black bear sow and two tiny cubs of the year. We worked the jam for about 45 minutes until relieved by other brigaders on duty.

A great day brings an end to our first week.

First 2019 Patrol at Grand Teton

Hi All,

Today was our first patrol in the park and a huge crowd gathered to greet us.

Actually they all came to see this grizzly bear sow

and her two cubs crossing the highway.

Later we worked a moose jam with a cow and a newborn calf. The sky got ugly but we just had a few sprinkles.

Even with the gray sky, Grand Teton, Mt Owen and Tewinnot (left to right) looked stunning.
What a great day to start the season!

Altitude Acclimitization

Hi All,

If you have followed us for a while, you know that we travel for two days then take a day off to visit a park or Wildlife Refuge. Two days driving west of Austin found us at Lathrop State Park in Southeast Colorado. We had a lovely pull through site with mountain view's .

After dinner we went for a walk and were soon reminded that this park is at 6,400 feet elevation. Great acclimatization for Grand Teton.

This snow capped peak was visible out our window.

This place is not only high but also windy. We went for a hike around the lake in 25 mph wind this morning . Since we were hiking in a circle, we expected some time with the wind in our face and time with it at our backs. Sure didn't feel that way. Nice mountain scenery though

with blue penstemon in the foreground.

Meanwhile, in the Tetons, brigaders have grizzly bears coming out of their ears, including this sow with a tiny new cub.

On a lighter note, here is a reminder to celebrate the accomplishments of our children-regardless!
