Subject: Back Country Day

Hi All,

As you may remember, every two weeks we have a "Back Country Day" when we hike a park trail, learning more about the park and talking to visitors about bear safely and answering a wide variety of questions. We also keep an ear on the radio for wildlife jams where our help may be needed.

This morning we were fueling our vehicle at Dornan's when dispatch reported people chasing a moose at the nearby Chapel of the Transfiguration. All the brigaders were up north so we went over to check it out.- no moose, no chaser but a jaw dropping Mountain View with a brittle blue sky.

We then drove north to unload some extra traffic cones then off to Colter Bay to hike the Heron Pond/Swan Lake Trail. The beginning of the trail follows the edge of Colter Bay where we watched folks kayaking in the shadow of Mt Moran.

At Swan Lake, the water was so still that it was hard to tell sky from lake.
On the way home we stumbled upon a bear jam with a black bear sow and two tiny cubs of the year. We worked the jam for about 45 minutes until relieved by other brigaders on duty.

A great day brings an end to our first week.

Love,

Sandy & Carl
