Belfast, Northern Ireland

Hi All,

Elliot intended to book us an apartment in the "Titanic" quarter of Belfast. This image shows he succeeded. Our flat overlooked the birthplace of Titanic, the Harland & Wolff shipyard with the huge gantry cranes.

The Titanic Belfast exhibit was built a few years ago at a cost of $150 million

It is an incredible multimedia presentation that recounts the history of Belfast's industrial growth (30,000 workers at the H&W shipyard), the design, construction and short life of the "unsinkable" Titanic. The lives of several workers and passengers are woven into the narrative.

Further exhibits detail the search for and discovery of the sunken liner.

Wind and rain cancelled our walkabout plans so we took the city sightseeing bus. Much of the tour recounted the "trouble times" including hundreds of murals . Here is Bobby Sands who starved himself to death for a cause he believed in.

In a bit of gallows humor, the name of a fish and chips shop on Falls Road is "A Salt and Battered".

The most recent mural was painted last week when Shin Fein leader Gerry Adams was taken into police custody for questioning about a murder years ago.

For lunch we tried the Crown Saloon. The first pub on this site was built in 1826. The current bar dates to the 1880's.

As the bartender drew Sandy's Guinness he cleverly drew a shamrock in the foam.

The last stop on our tour was the Albert Clock Tower, built to commemorate the death of Queen Victoria 's husband, Prince Albert.

Tomorrow we explore more of Northern Ireland.

Love,

Sandy & Carl
