Great Basin

Hi All,

After yesterday's cave tour we returned to the coach for a late lunch. Since the forecast for today was all rain (and it turned out to be accurate), we made the most of the late afternoon on the Wheeler Peak scenic drive.

The views across the basin and range terrain were stunning even though the road was closed above 9500 feet due to snow and ice.

A closer views shows the sand dunes.

The yellow orange streak of fall aspen trees was impressive.

Since we couldn't get above 9,500 feet, we couldn't get to the grove of bristlecone pine trees. Some of these trees live over 5,000 years. Imagine a tree alive today that began growing before the pyramids were built! We had to settle for this one in the Visitor Center.

On the way down the mountain we spotted this mule deer doe

and her two fawns.

Back in town, we checked out some real estate. Gives new meaning to "fixer upper". Great views though.
All that was yesterday. With today's steady rain we are being very cat like.

Love,

Sandy & Carl
