Brookgreen Gardens

Hi All,

These are the magnificent gardens we discovered on our way south last October. Now in springtime the trees are leafed out and many flowering bushes are in bloom.

The gardens were created on a former rice plantation by Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington, wealthy New Yorkers who moved south in 1930 when Anna, a world renowned sculptor was diagnosed with tuberculosis.

The Huntingtons are depicted in this limestone statue.

This is Pegasus carved out of 20,000 pounds of granite.

Dionysus, goddess of wine is covered in gold leaf!

These statues by Anna depict Don Quixote with Sancho in the back.

Beautiful statues are everywhere. This is the view from our restaurant window during lunch.
After lunch we took a guided van tour of an adjacent plantation property and learned the early history of rice plantation before the civil war.

In addition to the formal statue gardens there is a zoo with local animals and birds. In one enclosure there were dozens of black crowned night-herons.

The raptor section featured several birds too injured to release including this bald eagle.

Sprinkled throughout the grounds we found numerous, huge, intricate Lego animals. This dragonfly contains 38,000 Lego pieces!
Another wonderful day.

Love,
