Angkor Wat

Hi All,

Angkor (City) Wat (Temple) was built in the early 12th century during the reign of Siryavarman II. It was a Hindu temple until converted to Buddhism in the 16th century.

We entered from the east gate with better morning sun and fewer people.

The closer you get, the more carving detail is visible in the stonework.

A series of bas-reliefs completely encircle the first level-2,600 feet, nearly half a mile of intricate carving.

This is the facade of level one.

The southwest tower with the steep steps to the third level. Fortunately there is now a flight of wooden steps with a handrail.

Throughout the complex there are signs urging people not to touch the stone since oils on our skin will discolor the sandstone.
It appears that many visitors are adolescent males!

From the third level we had a panoramic view across the jungle including a cluster of frangipani trees.

This shows the detail in about a 24" wide bas-relief section.

Here's another example of a warrior.

Our local guide, Jack took this stunning sunrise photo last January.
Our group had a lot of anticipation about our visit here and Angkor Wat did not disappoint.

Love,
