Saving the Planet & Visiting Homeless

Hi All,

After escaping the macaque attack, we visited the Mangrove Conservation Center. These folks are trying to reverse decades of mangrove forest destruction by planting new trees in the mud flats,

Carl did his part in knee deep mud!

After we got Carl cleaned up we went on a very special trip to an area where new immigrants and people moving to the city from the countryside live. To get there we took a 15 minute Tuk-Tuk ride.

Two passengers, no seat belts, city traffic. What a ride!

There is a Thai boxing training center in the homeless compound where a former champion trains young boys age 7-16. Seven boys live here full time and the master only makes money from a cut of the young boxer's winnings.
It's not a great future but is is a path out of poverty.

There are 100 homes here and 300 residents. This is our tour leader Leky with three young girls who led us around to see where they lived.
Smiling people, no signs of hostility but sad to see how these people have to live. All the kids go to a Buddhist temple school and the government staffs a dispensary where folks can get needed medication.

Sad and sobering but it was a great opportunity to see this sector of Thai life. It was made possible by Leky's husband Jack who grew up in similar circumstances.

Our next stop is Laos.

Love,

Sandy & Carl
