Killing Fields

Hi All,

Most people recall the brutal Khmer Rouge reign of terror and killing depicted in the movie "Killing Fields". Today we visited some of the sites from that time.

From 1975-1979, the Khmer Rouge killed between 1.5 and 3 million people.

This high school was converted to a prison.

17,000 prisoners were brought here and none survived except for seven who were still alive when the Vietnamese army liberated Pnom  Phen. The cells were 4' x 6'.

We got to meet and talk to one of the seven survivors, Bou Meng who has written a book about his experiences.

This gruesome mural depicts some of the atrocities.

After prisoners were tortured to confess crimes they did not commit, they were brought to this place to be killed. Here are some of the 86 mass graves containing 60-120 bodies each. One grave had over 450 bodies.

The skeletal remains of almost 9,000 people are in this memorial stupa.

A horrible sight but a powerful reminder.
Tomorrow we fly north to visit Angkor Wat.

Love,

Sandy & Carl
