Angkor Thom-Bayon

Hi All,

On the way to the next temple we drove through a narrow gate guarded by a row of dieties on the left and demons on the right.

To our surprise and delight a group of elephants came walking up the road.

The next temple complex was Angkor Thom, built by King Jaravarman VII as his capital. The full Angkor Thom is huge at four square miles, dwarfing Angkor Wat. Our visit was confined to Bayon, characterized by very large heads built into the towers. Bayon has 54 towers, one for each province in the Khmer empire at that time.

This is a relief commemorating a naval battle

where some of the unlucky sailors fell overboard and were eaten by crocodiles.

From the lower level three faces are visible.

This panorama contains seven faces.

Most have enigmatic smiles reminiscent of the Mona Lisa.
That was our morning. We then escaped the mid day heat back at the hotel. Late afternoon we have one more temple.

Love,
