Banteay Srei

Hi All,

In the afternoon, most of us went on an optional trip to Banteay Srei, a small temple not fat from Angkor Wat.

Unlike the gray sandstone of the other temples, this one is made of pink and yellow sandstone. The scarcity of these sandstone colors accounts for the small temple size.

Built in the early 900's and consecrated in 967, it was rediscovered in 1905 and restored by the French in the mid- 1930's.

It became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997 but only after all of the land mines were cleared.

The towers are not too tall but the details in the stone carving are stunning

There is a Hindu legend associated with each of these panels.

This three headed snake is s Naga.

This panel shows Shiva and his wife riding a cow.

It was a fabulous visit and it sure whetted our appetites for tomorrow's visit to Angkor Wat.

Love,
